Lavender Grosso

I am lucky enough to have surprisingly good conditions for growing lavender. Most of it is pretty much spent at this time of year, but the lavender grosso blooms latest and is still nice to pick and dry. Intensely fragrant, it’s good in little organza bags in your closet to repel moths. But maybe I should make a wreath?

Just harvested lavender grosso, ready to dry for sachet or cooking.

Flower basket display

At the incredible Bayview Nursery in Whidbey Island, WA, the combination of horticultural skill AND beautiful, artful display came together brilliantly in this tall raised basket of starry petunias.

Yellow curb

This is one of those images I don’t really have a title for, and don’t really know why I love it, but I keep wanting to look at it, so there might be something there for you, too.

Tomatoes and chard harvest

Went outside a couple of days ago and picked tomatoes and chard. Love this warm fall we are having.

Mary statue and votive

I was at a funeral for a neighbor’s father. It was a lovely ceremony and very moving. The church had a beautiful niche on the side for the Virgin Mary. I lit a candle.

Fresh peaches

We went to Moses Lake WA for the first time, and I got to go to the Farmers Market and buy some fresh peaches. Is there anything prettier? I like this post very much and am calling it my Best Post of the Week.

Yellow shadows

We saw the sun for a few minutes this morning, but now all is gray again. In honor of the brief view of the happiness-giving orb, here are two studies in yellow, complete with shadows. Visit Shadow Shot Sunday for more interesting shadows. Go to Color Carnival for more brilliant color, and of course, Mellow Yellow Monday for you know what. Check out Today’s Flowers, too.

The lemons are SOOC, or straight out of the camera. As for the daffs, I couldn’t resist Auto Tone in Photoshop when I saw the neat purple-ish background it produced.

Harvest

Well, the tomatoes aren’t too big, but in Seattle any ripe tomato is a wonder some years. The little yellow ones were from a volunteer plant in a flowerbed, unlike the started plants I bought and planted in black containers back in May, and sure enough, the volunteer is far bigger and happier in every way. It’s a puzzlement, because the plants in the ground last year refused to ripen, even cherry tomatoes. Sigh.

There’s also broccoli rabe in the basket. I planted seeds pretty early, and they were so spindly, went to seed right away, but THOSE seeds grew and now I have these huge, healthy plants, yielding like crazy. I like it steamed with olive oil, soy sauce and lots of garlic.

Happy Ruby Tuesday!

Flowers for Today: Fuchsia

I’ve learned that fuchsias (the late, long-time San Francisco columnist Herb Caen called them the world’s most carefully spelled flower!) require a steady diet of fertilizer to bloom well. So I finally was generous with the plant food, and look what happened! For more beautiful flowers from around the world, click HERE.
