String beans, three colors

I love string beans. They were my mom’s favorite vegetable, too. So fun to pick from the garden. Side note: When you cook the purple ones, they turn regular green and taste just like the green ones.

Purple, regular and yellow wax beans begin their summer abundance.

Bouquet close up

I picked a bouquet of mostly red flowers today. ‘Double Delight’ rose, a very dark burgundy day lily, and a little ruby red ‘Lucifer’ crocosmia in my back yard, for you.

You can see the pollen on the day lily petals…

Bouquet of cosmos and dahlias

The cosmos reseed most years and the dahlias come back, too. Lucky me!

Red and yellow bouquet

While strolling Burien WA’s Art Walk last week, I saw this mixed blossom bouquet in such an unusual color scheme, sitting in front of a business.

Abutilon

A fancy kind of abutilon (‘Tiger’s Eye’), with dark purple bud casings. Seen (of course!) at Seattle’s Volunteer Park Conservatory.

Daylily macro

These daylilies are really sort of a dark burgundy, but the photo makes them look more purple. Sorry about that. In any case, the throat and pollen is really yellow!

Dahlia bouquet with lilies

At the Renton (WA) Fall Harvest Festival on Saturday, I was surprised to see these bouquets of dahlias that included intensely fragrant lilies. The ones in my garden have long been finished. I bought some and the entire house is filled with their scent.

Burgundy daylily

Last week it rained, before the beautiful weekend we enjoyed, so of course I had to head out to the garden when it stopped. I’m enjoying the daylilies this year in their varying shades of orange, burgundy and peach. I think I have a yellow one, but it hasn’t bloomed yet.

Red begonias

Begonias bloom and bloom, with no removal of spent flowers (deadheading) needed, and they are happy to bloom in the shade for you. I try to overwinter them in my garden by adding a lot of mulch, which sometimes actually works, or take them indoors if I can. The colors of the flowers and the leaves are so varied. This one is just red, but what a red!
