Planter flowers with coleus

This display of shade-happy plants is a skillful combination of colors and textures, don’t you think? Some unknown floral designer did a fine job.

Coleus

These coleus plants are growing near my front door. I grew them from seed, which is surprisingly easy, as seeds go. If you find the seeds, don’t be afraid to try it. It’s time to take cuttings indoors to root in water, for bigger plants next year. They are very frost tender and hate the cold weather but do fine as houseplants if they have good light.

Orchid display

Oh, I love the Volunteer Park Conservatory. Is it any wonder I made a book about it? A recent visit to their unendingly beautiful and changing displays yielded this photo of orchids in a stray beam of sunlight. And just for fun, there’s a bonus photo below showing one of the unusual and creative plant combinations that delight me so. That one is SOOC Sunday (straight out of the camera), but I have tweaked the orchids slightly.

Visit Pink Saturday, Today’s Flowers, Weekend Flowers, Macro Friday, Macro Monday, Macro Flowers Saturday and Shadow Shot Sunday when you get a chance. And if you’ve arrived via a link, be sure to click on Sara’s Fave Photos to see the entire blog.

Throatwort flower

Here’s a new flower, to me at least. When I was at the Volunteer Park Conservatory event last week, the head gardener, talented David Helgeson, showed me this unusual flower called Throatwort (trachelium caeruleum). I think it’s beautiful. That’s a maidenhair fern on the left, and coleus on the right. By the way, I totally love using google images for plant identification and info.

Visit Flowers For Today for more flowers from around the world, and SOOC for more straight-out-of-the-camera shots. As long as you are here, though, you might as well try a tag like “purple” or perhaps “bouquet.” If you’ve reached this post via the permalink, the latest post and full blog is always at Sara’s Fave Photos, above.
