I know I’m rushing the season, but coming across these pinkish lavender lilacs I just had to post them. They bloomed in April in 2010 and maybe we’ll see lilacs in April this year, too. Right now that seems impossibly far away. Breathe that scent deep, now!

This soft pink hellebore, or helleborus, flower, was in a Garden Club flower show. Aren’t they just the most romantic flowers? And blooming in early February, to boot. The ones in my garden are not this far along, but they’ll get there.

I know it’s a bit of late notice, but I’ve just been so busy preparing for my SLIDESHOW of pretty pictures from my book coming right up on Weds., Feb. 6, 2013 in Des Moines, WA at 10:45am. Lunch is included with admission of $9. The Chinook District of the Washington Garden Clubs is having me speak and show images from my book “Flowers of Volunteer Park Conservatory.” The amazing and gifted senior gardener David Helegson will also be there to say what’s going on with the drama at the Conservatory, and answer horticultural questions, too. This pretty snapdragon flower stem is from the garden in our last house. That location had one really great feature of getting late afternoon sunlight, almost from the horizon. What a flower photography bonus! If you’ve read my “7 Secrets” of better photos (free download at the right) you’ll know I’m a big fan of sideways light. Anyway, it’s reminding me to plant some snap seeds this year.

The NW Flower & Garden Show is coming up in a few weeks here in Seattle at the Convention Center, and my daughter Lila and I will be there at Love That Image‘s booth 2806 with the book, the jewelry, and now prints as well. So exciting! Naturally (besides madly making jewelry pretties) I am taking a look at some past favorite flower photos I have taken there. This one just thrills me. I have no idea what the textured yellow ball flowers are. Anyone?

When it gets really sunny in the winter it gets cold. I just stay in and be warm, and enjoy the shadows on the curtains that the low sun makes. You can see the hatiora, or drunkard’s dream, in the photo below. How cheerful on a winter’s day: sunlight and bright yellow flowers.

I am happy that a few of my spring flower photos are on display at Today’s Flowers this weekend. I know it is rushing the season, but spring is so wonderful for those of us who just love flowers. This bouquet of pink and white tulips is a simple one, but so satisfying to me. The flowers have long faded, but the photo lives on. Not to get too spiritual about it, but maybe this is why flower photography has such a punch. It’s like cheating death, in a way. In any case, hope you enjoy the image. I’m calling it my Best Post of the Week.

Now that it’s a go with us exhibiting at the NW Flower & Garden Show in Seattle (come see Love That Image in booth 2806!), I’m having a lot of fun browsing through my photos from the last few years. I love that show, even if the garden exhibits are extremely dark, I guess to keep the plants from wilting or something. It does make photography a challenge, since many of us prefer natural light, and I find tripods so annoying. The solution is a camera that can take photos in low light. I use the Canon Powershot S95, now kind of outdated, but it works pretty darn well for a tiny thing that fits in my front jeans pocket. Be sure and download my Seven Secrets at right for tips on better photos, all with just a regular, simple camera.
