Mossy trees

Been walking in Seahurst Park in Burien WA all winter. The moss is amazing.

Merry Solstice!

This is my favorite holiday of the year. The light returns! A happy Winter Solstice to you. We can all agree that celebrating light is a wonderful thing.

May your own world continue to brighten.

Green, green, green

Could it be any greener? Our regular walks in a local park here in the Seattle area in the Pacific Northwest are now just a symphony of electric green after a whole lot of rain this week. The darling little ferns are licorice ferns, and they like to live on bigleaf maples, which these are. See all those leaves on the ground?

Ferns on mossy trees

I find these ferns enchanting. After a beautiful and very dry summer, it rained in the early fall a couple of good inches, just enough to get things going in the woods.

Ferny, mossy log

We have been taking mini-hikes in a wooded park near me in Seahurst Park in Burien, WA. Today it was raining quite hard. Can you tell this is in the Pacific Northwest?

Rose garden shadows

We visited Woodland Park Rose Garden in Seattle yesterday, in perfect weather. I need more pink roses in my life.

Giant palm leaf

I got to visit Seattle’s beloved Volunteer Park Conservatory again after a very long absence. It was as thrilling as ever. This palm leaf overhead was at least five feet wide!

Air plant shadows

After a nice soak and shake, these mostly tillandsia air plants are almost dry enough to go back on my windowsill.

Fall light in my living room

My living room jungle is coming alive with the lower light angling in from the southern exposure.

Old cedar tree

This cedar tree in my back yard looks like a regular-sized tree, until you realize the fence is six feet tall and the bench is a regular garden bench. Our guess is that the tree is maybe 300 years old. It is getting ready to drop some needles like it does every fall. It is waiting for rain, like we all are in Western Washington.

Very old cedar tree dwarfs the bench below it.
