Some roses from my garden, with a few stems of lavender, on the first day of summer. The lavender is at the perfect stage for drying, before the individual florets have opened, but it works well in a bouquet, too. The peach one is Carding Mill, a David Austin rose.

I got to visit Seattle’s beloved Volunteer Park Conservatory again after a very long absence. It was as thrilling as ever. This palm leaf overhead was at least five feet wide!

No room this year for a regular Christmas tree, but it looks quite festive anyway, don’t you think?

The early sunshine the other day was so beautiful. The peach tree leaves were still brightly colored.

This year some trees are doing the magical thing. This maple tree has become completely red, in a friend’s backyard the other day.

This cedar tree in my back yard looks like a regular-sized tree, until you realize the fence is six feet tall and the bench is a regular garden bench. Our guess is that the tree is maybe 300 years old. It is getting ready to drop some needles like it does every fall. It is waiting for rain, like we all are in Western Washington.
Very old cedar tree dwarfs the bench below it.

We have a small cherry tree that has not had cherries for awhile, for different reasons. Hubby put a big piece of mosquito netting around one branch clipped close with clothespins, and we actually have some ripe red ones. So very shiny and sweet.

I have a plum tree with several grafted branches of different plums. I think this branch has golden shiro plums, and it blooms the earliest. Not too many pollinators are outside yet, and in previous years I haven’t gotten much fruit set. Today I went out there and used a soft art brush, maybe 4″ wide, to help out and make like a bee. I’ve done this before and it seems to make a difference.

Winter sun goes deep into the room in Seattle on the last day of the year. So welcome! If I were a cat I know I’d be napping here.
