Winter scene in Purchase NY, guest image

A very fine winter scene of the melting snow by a relative who lives on the East Coast. I love this image!

Houseplants at solstice

We had a sunbreak, a very Seattle term for a brief appearance of the sun. The plants adore the light, pouring all the way into the living room at this time of year. May you have the bliss of a winter sunbreak often, and may all your leaves be green.

Early Girl tomato

I did a good job planting my Early Girls (and Sungolds) and they were watered well. So sweet!

Scenic Seabeck WA

On the way to Scenic Beach State Park Campground, this view near Seabeck was pretty scenic indeed. See the tiny boats in the distance?

Water, mountains, sky, with miniscule boats in the distance.

Venus fly trap got a spider

I’m brand new to the world of carnivorous plants. Someone gave me this tiny Venus fly trap (VFT) plant and I’m learning. It’s just a baby; the whole pot is only two inches wide. I put it outside for sun and bugs and was so surprised that it captured a big spider! I thought a mosquito or fruit fly was more its size.

Overachiever VFT

Houseplants in afternoon sunshine

Winter’s big plus up in Seattle is that the sun, when it’s shining, comes way deep into the room if you have a southern exposure. The plants are a bit confused as they get no direct sun in the summer but of course then there are much longer days.

Dried blue hydrangeas and a Thanksgiving cactus on mom’s glass-topped table, I think from the 30s.

Leaves in water

Autumn leaves floating in a plant saucer. We leave it out as a sort of birdbath for critters. In the spring it attracted a pair of mallard ducks!

Three succulents

The only name I know for sure is string of pearls for the middle one. Some kind of rosette with pink-gray leaves on the left, and the weirdest one, a cactus with long papery spines that are kind of like fingernails, but very pointy indeed, on the right. We’ll be getting sun in this window all winter.
