We have a small cherry tree that has not had cherries for awhile, for different reasons. Hubby put a big piece of mosquito netting around one branch clipped close with clothespins, and we actually have some ripe red ones. So very shiny and sweet.

In San Miguel de Allende, an art and tourist mecca in central Mexico, I went to a beautiful former factory, La Fabrica Aurora, which is now a shopping heaven. In the courtyard were these display of roses. Which are prettier, lavender or pink?

Today was the day for picking fruit in our backyard. The netting on the cherry tree worked! We have a 5-graft tree from Raintree Nursery, and this is the tree’s third year. The boysenberries are good this year, too. The raspberries not so much, and the blueberries are just getting going. What treasure!

Winter in Seattle, so far north, can be challenging when the light is so reduced. But the good part of the low-angled sun is that when it actually is sunny, the light streams in the south windows and makes marvelous shadows. This is my kitchen counter the other day. These are Meyer lemons, grown by friends in Northern California. Don’t they just look cheery? Meyer lemons are supposed to be a bit sweeter than regular lemons, but I don’t know. Their fragrance is a bit more flowery, perhaps. All lemons are good, especially in January, when their little sunny orbs are a feast for our eyes.
