This little darling always blooms at Halloween rather than wait for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving cactus plants have the pointy upper points on their leaves or clades. Here it is on a beautiful sunny day we had recently. In Seattle we cherish sunny days so much.

The magenta-pink-and-white flowers on this Thanksgiving cactus are so showy!

You can tell by the points on the leaves that it’s actually a Thanksgiving cactus, not a Christmas cactus. It actually bloomed right on time this year. Make sure you take care of them more like regular houseplants, don’t let them roast in the sun or get super dry like regular desert cacti.

Thanksgiving cactus blooms in the late fall sunlight. Magenta with white flowers are so showy.

I love this little cutie, and it blooms in the spring for me, even though there’s not a whole lot of sun for it here in Seattle, even in my south window. But be careful! Each flower is about a centimeter across, less than half an inch. The hairy stuff helps protect it from sun and water evaporation.

I have a south window and this time of year in Seattle I start to get direct sun. Two small baby cactus plants went and had babies of their own!

A few years ago I was lucky enough to tour the incredible Longwood Gardens outside of Philadelphia. My goodness, just stellar. Here is a shot of some succulent plants.

The only name I know for sure is string of pearls for the middle one. Some kind of rosette with pink-gray leaves on the left, and the weirdest one, a cactus with long papery spines that are kind of like fingernails, but very pointy indeed, on the right. We’ll be getting sun in this window all winter.

Just a year ago, took a quick tour of the Cactus House at Volunteer Park Conservatory, in Seattle. I hope they can open again soon. We all miss it so much. Bonus image below!

Pretty little hen-and-chick succulents (not cactus!)
Bonus image:

Stunning accordian-pleated cactus (also a succulent!). When they have more water, they expand.

At the Desert Garden in Phoenix, AZ, a new succulent to me, a purple opuntia or prickly pear.
