September tomatoes

The tomato yield has been super this year. I got them in our new raised beds in late May, which is early for tomatoes in Seattle. I thought it might be too early, but the soil warms up a bit faster in raised beds and I think that made a big difference. Also we had evenly beautiful weather this summer, the most beautiful summer I ever remember in the 20 years plus I’ve been here. I almost feel guilty since so many other places in the world had difficult weather, to say the least. But I have enjoyed the balmy, sunny days so much.

Early Girls (the bigger red ones) and lots of yellow pears. The darker burgundy-colored ones are very sweet. Plenty more coming up.

Summer cherry tomatoes

It’s gray and rainy in Seattle this week, with more darkness on the way. Let’s think about summer sunshine and tomatoes, just for a bit, shall we?

Finally we’re getting some warm, sunny weather in Seattle. The tomatoes are loving it!

Lemon cucumbers

If you have never eaten lemon cucumbers, poor you. They are delicious! They are called that because when you let them (over)ripen, they appear the size and shape of lemons, but still taste like regular cucumbers. As a public service announcement I offer the correct stage to pick them. They should have just a tiny hint of yellow starting. Select ones in the store at this color; do not buy if dark yellow. The inner seeds are hardly developed at all. So tender, sweet and crunchy! Rub off the little prickly things and you can even eat the skin at this stage, but I do peel them. Let’s hear it for backyard gardening!

Tomato harvest

And don’t forget the lemon cucumbers, two kinds of string beans, or the truly sweet Italian plums. Late summer is the best!

Tomato harvest

I fertilized my tomatoes a bit better this year, and they show it. Sweet Sungold cherry tomatoes, with Early Girls and some San Marzano romas. I love the little green hats they wear that show how very fresh they are.

Tomatoes and string bean harvest

I managed to give the vegetable beds some organic August fertilizer and watered in well. The string beans are doing a whole new crop. If we get a warm September there will be lots and lots more!
