Perfection and imperfection

The beautiful calla lilies are beginning to bloom. Something took a bite out of that leaf!

Sweetpeas in the garden

This year my sweetpeas have done so well. I’ve learned that they really do need loose, fertile soil and a lot of sun. Even in this heatwave (Seattle is having a record-breaking five days over 90), they are blooming so beautifully. They seem to be most fragrant in the late afternoons and early evenings, after the sun has faded.

Tiny cyclamen

These darling little cyclamen plants bloom in late summer. I think this is Cyclamen colchicum. They like dry shade, quite useful in my Pacific Northwest garden.

Back-lit hollyhocks

Aren’t these unusual hollyhocks pretty? Of course, the gardeners at the Volunteer Park Conservatory in Seattle know what they are doing.

Candelabra

At a friend’s home, this free-standing, wrought-iron candelabra with glass votives cast a fine shadow.

White brugmansia

The cream-colored brugmansias (Angels Trumpets) with their long, twisty buds are now in Seattle’s Volunteer Park Conservatory! I adore them, and the scent is truly of the angels.
