Fear not!

“And the angel said unto them, ‘Fear not!'” This is one of my favorite quotes from the Bible. Especially good for this year, these times. Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Air plants!

An exciting thing happened. Someone sent me a gift of 11 air plants! I’ve kept some air plants alive for a few years so I’m pretty sure I know what to do with them, but I’m hoping these don’t need unusual care. What I know to do is soak them for half an hour once a week (upside down so their little butts are in the air), shake off excess water, and keep on a bright windowsill with lots of air circulation. Makes sense, right? Anyone out there know what kinds these are? I’ve included a picture with numbers to help you tell me what’s what if you know. Thanks in advance!

All probably some kind of tillandsias???

Know any names? Please post in comments. Thanks!

Autumn color

I’ve been taking photos out my front window this whole season. Yesterday, just before a big rain started, it looked like this.

Threatening sky

Rose gardeners PSA: If it’s going to rain big, go out there and cut your opened roses for bouquets. They’ll just get ruined if you leave them out there.

Rain is coming. Might as well cut roses and bring inside.

Snowy dogwood and hydrangea

The recent snow was beautiful in the garden.

Succulents at Longwood

A few years ago I was lucky enough to tour the incredible Longwood Gardens outside of Philadelphia. My goodness, just stellar. Here is a shot of some succulent plants.

Even on a gray and rainy day, there is beauty in the world.

Three succulents

The only name I know for sure is string of pearls for the middle one. Some kind of rosette with pink-gray leaves on the left, and the weirdest one, a cactus with long papery spines that are kind of like fingernails, but very pointy indeed, on the right. We’ll be getting sun in this window all winter.

Smoky sky

We are grateful that the air in Seattle is not worse. We are not dealing with orange visions of armageddon, just “very unhealthy” levels of air pollution, blowing in from fires not very close by, thank goodness.

Rain coming

We are students of clouds and cloud cover in Seattle. It doesn’t actually rain that much, about the same as New York City per year, but we have more cloudy days than any other city, I’ve heard. So we look at the sky a lot to check if it’s clearing up. Or not. Loved these exciting, swirling clouds before some recent rain.
