Fancy goldfish

Our fancy goldfish are getting bigger. Here they are swimming in a beam of sunlight. Don’t you love those googly eyes?

Koi fish in aquarium

We were in a Chinese restaurant with aquariums (aquaria?) and one had several koi fish in it, maybe 10 inches or so big. Hand held and slow exposure so not very sharp, but still I like this photo very much.

Winter arrangement

On my visit to Seattle’s Volunteer Park Conservatory last week, there was this in the entryway:

Plant shadows

I was at a local dance venue, CC’s Lounge in Burien, WA, and the wonderful evening slanted light rays were coming in the front window. Isn’t this mysterious looking?

Blue chair shadows

Even though it can get quite dark in northern and cloudy Seattle in the fall and winter, when the sun does come in a south-facing window it’s glorious, low-angled light. This was taken in my living room, just the other day. Can you tell it’s my absolute fave place to sit?

Visit Shadow Shot Sunday for more creativity unleashed by light and shadow, Blue Monday for more blue things, Weekend Reflections and Windows and Doors. And check out a new category or tag, while you’re here. Might as well. The latest post can always be found at Sara’s Fave Photos.

Early Girl tomato

I can hardly believe that I got any tomatoes at all, but here is proof. September is a bit late for first tomatoes, though, don’t you think? I threw a couple of handfuls of dolomitic lime on the soil at planting and it made a huge difference. No more yucky blossom-end rot, and the vines look GREAT. Here in the Pacific Northwest the soil tends to be pretty acidic, thus easy success with rhodies, blueberries and evergreens. But tomatoes seem to prefer a more alkaline soil.

Gardening note: I was always hesitant to use dolomitic lime because I was sure it must make the soil more acidic—because it was “lime” and that had to be acid, right? WRONG. Silly me. It makes the soil more alkaline just like it says on the box and is great for plants like lilacs, peonies (mine flowered for the first time!) and hellebores, all of which really hate an acid soil.

Deck shadows

A shady deck on a sunny day is a fine thing. This place was as delightful to sit in as it looks. So much is said and implied by shadows!

Garden fountain

Today I went on the Federal Way (Washington) Garden Tour. It benefits the Federal Way Symphony and I got to see six of the nine gardens. Whew! Here’s a delightful water feature from an amazing hidden jungle in the Hendricks garden.

For more fascinating shadows seen all over the world, visit Shadow Shot Sunday. Or try Scenic Sunday, or perhaps SOOC (straight out of the camera) Sunday.

You might try a search for “shadows” or clicking on that tag while you’re here. Returning to the latest post is a click away, on Sara’s Fave Photos. Thanks for visiting!

Pool reflections

Looking through the archives, I pulled up this shot of the pool right inside the main entrance of the Conservatory at the Bronx Botanical Garden, taken a year ago. I love the white orchids. New York sure does things up big.

Visit Watery Wednesday and Weekend Reflections, SOOC (straight out of the camera) and Window Views, for more interesting photos that their names suggest. And you can always navigate back to the latest post here, at Sara’s Fave Photos, clicking on the header above.

Chair shadows

This quick bit of sunshine we saw last week was the last time I did see the sun, so I’m happy to post the brief reminder here. It’s been gray and rainy, typical for this time of year, but it does get a bit gloomy sometimes. Especially when I want to go out in the garden and get things done. Sigh.

This is a SOOC, or straight-out-of-the-camera shot, like most of mine. Visit Shadow Shot Sunday for more interesting shadows. See more windows (and doors) in Window Views. Visit Blue Monday for more things of all kinds in blue.

Navigation Note: Now you can always get back to the latest entry here by clicking on the “Sara’s Fave Photos” title at the top, no matter where you’ve wandered in the blog.
