Yet another rose from the rainy photo session the other day. This ‘Dolly Parton’ rose is one of my favorites, and the photo actually doesn’t do it justice. It’s the most scintillating shade of deep red-orange, wildly fragrant, and of course has that great name.

Here’s another perfect rose, bathed in raindrops. This is the Peace rose, always a fave of me and so many others. I love its creamy yellow petals, edged with the palest, sweetest pink, and its healthy, bright green leaves. Like all my roses, it is fragrant. Why else have roses?

The rain has been wreaking havoc on the rose bushes, but a couple of dry-ish days allowed a few flowers to open to their potential magnificence—just to get rained on yet again. In the brief window of opportunity that a break in the wet allowed, I went outside and caught this beautiful apricot Sundowner rose, with such an appropriate name.

My sister and I went on an architectural tour in Seattle on a cloudy day after a rain and all I could photograph was a flower. No, that’s not exactly true, but that’s sure what I am attracted to. Here’s a lovely early rose in some lucky person’s garden.

Just taken today in the downpour we had this afternoon, this photo of a lovely container planting outside the Volunteer Park Conservatory had some late hellebores happy in all the wet.

I’m trying out a new photo meme today: Distracted By Shiny Things. I think I have one or two things that qualify. Heck, even yesterday’s post of the ocean was pretty shiny!

This is one of the 150 or 200 tulips we planted in our garden last fall, photographed the other day after the soft rain stopped. I totally love them.

They take a lot of work to plant, you know. In the fall in a spot with excellent drainage, you have to dig quite deep, a good foot. Fill back half way, improve the soil with compost and a couple of handfuls of bone meal, then place the bulbs (a few inches apart) on that, about six inches from the top surface, pointed end up. Fill the hole with more good soil, and wait eagerly for spring.

When I was a kid in New York City, we called them fireplugs. I think that now they are fire hydrants? In any case, I loved the bright colors seen while driving by on a wet, fall day in Portland.

Today is Thursday Challenge, and the theme this week is “Red.” This photo is also a good entry for Color Carnival.

A few weeks ago we were in Portland and I took the shot from the window as we drove across the Willamette river on the Morrison bridge. I once met someone from Willamette University and he told me it’s pronounced to rhyme with “damn it” as in, “It’s Willamette, damn it!” So now you know, and the river is pronounced the same way.

I do not know what this tree is. [Now I’ve learned it’s sorrel tree or Oxydendrum arboreum.] The fall leaves are brilliant red (taken a month ago) but it almost looks like it’s flowering. I also like that the white sky gives it an almost Christmassy look. A rainy walk in the neighborhood can yield wonderful things, if you’re a photo junkie like me. Today I am posting two flowers in honor of being Guest Friend on Flowers for Today, where you can see lovely flowers of all kinds posted on blogs around the world.

Here are some snapdragons from my garden, “snapped” mid-October in a sunbreak after a rain, with my house in the background. I grew these from seed so I’m extra happy with them. If we get a mild winter they might even live over to next year.

Below the snaps is a red, red rose, taken in a Wallingford garden on the same day as the snapdragons.
