Backlit irises

Glorious spring weather this weekend in Seattle. The red roses (‘Crimson Glory’?) are on a bush I rooted myself! Beyond the little plum tree, the rest of the yard is my lovely neighbor’s.

Iris macro

Irises not only come in every color of the rainbow, they are even fragrant.

Snake’s head flower

I’ve always called these checkered tulips, which they are not; they are fritillaria. A very cute early spring bulb flower, just showing in my garden now. I was charmed to hear them called snake’s head flower, something new to me. The buds DO look like that, don’t they?

Almost looking fake, these fritillaria are also called snake’s heads.

Muscari buds

Sometimes the bud stage is as nice as the fully flowering one. The sense of promise! This patch of grape hyacinths or muscari is getting ready to bloom very soon.

Germinating peas

We’ve been having a cold and wet Spring in Seattle. Even though I soaked them for a few hours before planting, my SugarSnap peas took almost three weeks to germinate! But finally, they are showing (this photo taken a couple of days ago in a sunbreak). Above and to the right of the teensy shoots just breaking through the ground are some SugarSnap starts I happened to find for sale, so that’s going to make harvest longer. Spinach seeds just showing their true leaves to the left.

Peas begin to show above the surface of the soil. Can you see them?

Chionodoxa

Chionodoxa, little bulbs commonly known as glory-of-the-snow, bloom in very early spring. So welcome on a recent sunny day.

Almost Spring

Almost but not quite Spring; just a few more days until the calendar tells us it’s official. My forsythia is getting ready.

Succulents at Longwood

A few years ago I was lucky enough to tour the incredible Longwood Gardens outside of Philadelphia. My goodness, just stellar. Here is a shot of some succulent plants.

Houseplants in afternoon sunshine

Winter’s big plus up in Seattle is that the sun, when it’s shining, comes way deep into the room if you have a southern exposure. The plants are a bit confused as they get no direct sun in the summer but of course then there are much longer days.
