Rose on a table

This is a late bloom of Crimson Glory, a deep cherry-red rose my friend rooted for me many years ago. It smells so intensely sweet!

Brought in roses before the rain

My bedroom overlooks our rose bed, which has about fifteen rosebushes and is in front of the house. Lots of people walk by with their dogs, or just stroll by for a walk. So I am reluctant to cut any roses for bouquets, thus reducing the view for myself and passersby. But a big rain was forecast (finally!), so I cut most of them. Once it rains hard on roses, they don’t look so good for anyone, so best to bring them in.

If only you could smell them, so incredibly sweet! Homegrown roses smell the best.

Single rose

This is from a Crimson Glory rosebush I rooted from a cutting a few years ago. Here in Seattle we are expecting big rain, finally, so I picked this fall blossom.

Houseplants in afternoon sunshine

Winter’s big plus up in Seattle is that the sun, when it’s shining, comes way deep into the room if you have a southern exposure. The plants are a bit confused as they get no direct sun in the summer but of course then there are much longer days.

Drying hydrangeas

This is the perfect time to see if any of your hydrangeas are ripe for drying. The petals need to be crepe-y,  sort of wrinkled, but still have good color. I put them in an inch of water, at the most. When the water evaporates in a few days, the flowers should still look wonderful. Voila!

Hyacinth bud

Sometimes I think I enjoy buds almost more than the flowers. Possibilities! Here’s to 2018 developing into a very good year for us all.

Flowers from the NWFGS

The Northwest Flower & Garden Show has ended but the photos of flowers live on. Here are two beauties: a bookcase full of bouquets and a ravishing and exotic protea bloom below. Be sure to scroll down a few photos for several more I posted last week from last year’s show, or just put NWFGS in the search box at right.
