Volunteer Park Conservatory

Visited my favorite Seattle haunt, the Volunteer Park Conservatory last week. You can see that restoration work is progressing on the Seasonal House on the right. Full project is due to be done in December. Aren’t the outdoor plantings lovely?

Brugmansia

Brugmansia, or Angels Trumpet, is a magnificent tropical flower that we can grow in the Pacific Northwest if we take them inside in winter. This beauty is blooming at the Volunteer Park Conservatory, currently undergoing the final phase of a huge restoration.

Fig tree

I went in a friend’s backyard recently and what did I see? What a thrill to see a fig tree, covered in a LOT of figs. Yippee! I might get a fresh fig or two this year.

Florist azaleas

At Seattle’s Volunteer Park Conservatory  the other evening, they had pink-and-white florist azaleas on display. Aren’t they scrumptious?

Today is my sixth Blogoversary. I have made almost 1,500 blog posts and have had the pleasure of almost 18,000 comments! And do you believe, in all that time and all those comments, NOT ONE was ever less than kind and appreciative. What a great group of people enjoy pretty photos.

Here’s to many more years. I’m just getting the hang of this.

Spring at the Conservatory

As many of you know, I am in love with the Volunteer Park Conservatory in Seattle, and even did a book about it not that long ago. I am so proud to say I’ve been invited to serve on its Board of Directors. The photo below was taken today in the Conservatory at the Annual Meeting of its support organization, the Friends of the Conservatory, where my new status was made official. I’m so excited! What a wonderful place, enjoyed by so many people.

Peacock window

This large peacock window over the entrance to Seattle’s beloved Volunteer Park Conservatory on Capitol Hill is the original window, and over one hundred years old. It is beautiful on sunny days and on gray and rainy ones as well.

Brugmansia print

These lush, tropical brugmansia flowers bloom for long periods and can survive as houseplants in the Seattle area if taken indoors when it gets cold. I love their heavenly shapes and fragrance (they are also called Angels Trumpet) and used this image for the cover of my book. The swirly buds start out yellow and become peachy pink as they mature.

This image is available as a signed print for your home or office, one of the 15 best images from my book, Flowers of Volunteer Park Conservatory: Blooming Month by Month. Prints have no watermarks, of course. All are 8″ x 10″ archival-quality photo prints, beautifully matted in white to 11 x 14″. Shop here or by clicking on the Prints tab above.
