Roses in a fountain

Highline Botanical Garden had an event today with Ciscoe Morris giving a talk, so I had to go and check it out. They had the place all decorated, including these roses in the big fountain. Cloudy weather can be great for certain types of flower photos, can’t it? I like the moody quality of this photo and am calling it my Best Post of the Week.

Mellow Yellow Monday, Watery WednesdayOutdoor Wednesday, Color Carnival, Pink Saturday, SOOC Sunday (straight out of the camera) Scenic Sunday, Today’s Flowers, Macro Monday, Macro Flowers Saturday and Macro Friday are all neat blogs and memes worth a visit. Sailboat docking at dusk

Time for a scenic photo. This is at little Lake Burien, south of Seattle WA, a few weeks ago. Don’t you just love, love, love those pink skies? I also thought it was nice of the person to wear that pretty red top for me to photograph.

Rose campion

An old-fashioned flower, for sure. My mom used to grow this one. It’s very, very tough, can bloom in sun or shade, reseeds very vigorously. Also it’s on the tall side, which I like. But the color of its small flowers (one inch or 3 cm) is extraordinary: an electric magenta that seems to move to red—just the most shimmering, intense color, and combined with its silvery stems and leaves, a real showy plant.

Eagle flying at dusk

This is from last year when we went camping at the Dungeness Recreation Area campground in the Olympic Peninsula in the Pacific Northwest. To me, the water and the pinkish, foggy air is even more beautiful than the big flying bird, but it was quite a moment in any case.

Visit Wordless Wednesday, Watery Wednesday, Outdoor Wednesday, Pink Saturday, Scenic Sunday, Skywatch Friday and Camera Critters for more photo fabulousness.

Last minute reminder: If you are in Seattle tomorrow on Thursday, August 4 at 6-8pm, please come to the Conservatory’s free Open House and book signing for my new book, Flowers of Volunteer Park Conservatory: Blooming Month By Month. Dyes Inlet, Washington

Visiting my friend and web developer Marsha Perry of Perry Internet Consulting (hi Marsha!) in Silverdale recently, we strolled along the water at a cute little waterside park. Sunshine, barbeques, kids, the works. I didn’t know what water it was and had to look at a map to learn that we were viewing Dyes Inlet, part of Puget Sound. You can actually see the tiny tip of Mt. Rainier right behind that boat, if you squint.

White peony blossom

The peonies have been spectacular this year. Some new ones have flowered for the first time. I love the delicacy of this white one, showing faint pink and yellow tones but still that perfect peony pearlescent puff.

Mellow Yellow Monday has more posts with a splash of yellow; Pink Saturday, Macro Flowers Saturday, Macro Monday and Macro Friday are good, too. If there is only one photo below, click on Sara’s Fave Photos for others. Happy Fourth to all my USA readers!

Astoria Bridge in the sunshine

We visited Astoria, Oregon a couple of years ago, on my birthday. Browing through old photos, I saw this view of the Astoria Bridge over the Columbia River, actually one of the most dangerous stretches of water anywhere, but so lovely on a clear spring day.

Boats on the water

A gray sky, late in the day, but the calm water gives this a peaceful feeling. A little slice of Seattle for you.

Raindrops on red stem

My neighbors had a party last week, and even though they have a great deck and yard, it rained. Not ideal for a party, but for those of us who ALWAYS carry a camera, it had its compensations. This evergreen clematis armandii, I believe, is very happy twining about his deck railing, even (and perhaps especially) in the rain.

Bleeding heart leaf with raindrop

Bleeding heart, or dicentra, is one of those great aquaphobic leaves that give lady’s mantle a run for their money when it comes to pretty raindrops. I put one in a newly-cleared shady part of the garden and it seems to be very happy, which makes me happy.
