Woman ship statue
I know there’s a special name for this sort of statue, but I can’t for the life of me remember what it is. Anyone? She is from the prow of an old ship, and has a nice, inspired look about her. A goddess in an old-fashioned dress? And is that a very low cut neckline, or not? She is a bit dusty, but still so lovely. She lives at the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI), a wonderful and unusual museum in Seattle. And she casts a great shadow, I think! Visit Shadow Shot Sunday for more shadows seen around the world.

Her shadow looks like that of a real person! Nice!
The term I think you are looking for is figurehead. They were supposed to bring good luck.
This one looks well restored.
As Shannon mentioned if you only saw the shadow you’d believe it was a real person.
Very nice shadow find!
She does indeed cast a beautiful shadow! I’m glad to see that Carletta knew the name of this type of statue as I had no idea! Oooh and she does have a very low cut neckline doesn’t she! A wonderful photo from your unusual museum 🙂
Yes, a figurehead! That’s it! Thank you so much. On looking at her more closely, I see she has sleeves the same color as the bodice, so I think in fact it’s a decorous high neck, more’s the pity. And I thought sailors are sort of rowdy in things like that.
She certainly has captured my attention..something about her facial expression and the hand to her chest as though she is deeply breathing in the sea air!
With a heartfelt “thank you” Sara for commenting on my recent post and leaving me such wise encouragement. I actually did the breathing last night when the “night fears” took over. I have written your advise on a card to remind me when my mind forgets this simple way of relaxation. hugs aNNa
Pretty shadow from a pretty lady! We find these figure heads so interesting – they are all so different. We’ve never seen one like this. Wonder if it was made to look like someone?
What seas have you seen
with your sky-blue eyes, woman
bedecked in azure?
Love the figurehead shadow — and that you even found a figurehead somewhere to photograph, shadow or not! Great shot!
