Stargazer lily
They do smell heavenly. But be super careful about getting the pollen on your clothes, as it can stain permanently, I’ve found out, unhappily. I grew this and it bloomed in August. They are actually pretty darn easy to grow, but do put in stakes early, because they get tall and delightfully covered with flowers and then maybe a wind comes along and pfffft, it’s a mess. All you gardeners out there, stake early and stake well! You’ll be glad you did.
Visit Macro Monday, Mellow Yellow Monday and Ruby Tuesday for more great photos in blogland. And for sure, Color Carnival, too.

Lovely! I have some of those, and you’re right on both counts. Yes, the pollen does stain – beware if you have dogs!! I keep greyhounds and if they brush against the blooms, they can pick up pollen on their fur and transfer it to your nice white jeans! LOL!
I have my stargazers in pots, so they each have a wire frame permanently in there which I can just attach the stems to with ties. Safer than stakes, which can take your eye out, but perhaps not so flexible in terms of arrangement.

What a beautiful lily with such an evocative name. There must be a little corner of my garden that needs one.

What a beauty. My love — a botanist — says that many dyes are made from pollen.

Quilty’s comment makes a lot of sense. I was wondering if that was the case, since that color does NOT want to come out of cloth.

Sara L. Chapman on 02 Feb 2010 at 2:05 pm #
Tiger lilies are mostly orange. If you want to know what a flower looks like, google images is the way to go. Thanks for visiting!

Beautiful photo of this impressive flower. The casablanca variety is even more fragrant and can mask just about any odor which is why florists like to use them in restrooms during events.
Did you know that “Stargazers” were cultivated to face upward so that they are more versatile in floral arrangements? These lilies used to all hang downward like the white easter lilies until a California cultivator developed the “Stargazer”.
Sara L. Chapman on 03 Feb 2010 at 9:19 am #
Wow, I did not know that about their name. Fascinating! I so appreciate your comment.
Lori E on 03 Feb 2010 at 11:18 am #
Yes so easy to grow, I even put out the plants I get at Easter and they have done well.
As for the orange pollen I bought a bouquet for my desk on my way into work one morning. I smelled them in the store of course.
Imagine my delight to look in my rear view mirror in the car and see the bright orange smeared across my face.
I wish the cashier had mentioned it. Perhaps she thought it was a birthmark or some strange illness.

I never knew about the pollen staining clothing. Thanks for the tip. Another lovely photo.
