California poppies
In California, it is illegal to pick the orange poppies growing by the side of the road, as they are the beloved state flower. I heard you can’t even pick them in your garden, but that can’t be true. Here in Seattle, they grow very well also, maybe too well sometimes. They actually are great in bouquets. Clipping the long seedpods will extend the bloom quite a bit and help prevent way too many plants from appearing everywhere.
So, which view do you prefer? Leave a comment and let me know.
Visit Color Carnival for more brilliant color and Shadow Shot Sunday for more intriguing shadows. Both shots were straight out of the camera, or SOOC. And I like this post so much I’ve called it my Best Post of the Week.
That last shot of the translucent poppies is just stunning!
Both are lovely, but I have a slight preference for the deep, rich orange of the first shot.
Good photos! I like the second- makes it look like a jungle.
I never saw this color of poppies. Amazing!

Help, come and bail me out. because I just stole some poppies from the road side. And I haven’t even told my husband now that I have told the whole wide world.
Ann, I think you are safe if you are in New Zealand. Only in California is it illegal to pick them. And only these orange ones. But we’ll be watching you from now on!
Thanks everyone for visiting and leaving a comment. Much appreciated.

Gorgeous captures for the day, Sara, as always! The colors are breathtaking and such lovely shadows! It is nice to have the sunshine, isn’t it? Hope you have a great weekend!

Beautiful. Poppies are so gorgeous in the sunlight, and they produce such wonderful shadows.
Those are beautiful poppies!
I really love the 2nd shot 🙂 gorgeous poppies!
Such beautiful shadows. Oh, how I wish they grew here too, I have tried . . . .
I really like them both but the second one is my favourite! I had no idea that it was illegal to pick the orange poppies! Handy info to know should I ever visit California 🙂
These are truly beautiful photgraphs of beautiful flowers. Glad you told me not to pick, I never would have guesssed that. Might have gotten arrested a few times as I frequent California and pick flowers, rocks and sticks all over!
Good job!
Peace.
Oooo, you do tempt…and what a beautiful bouquet they’d make! I rarely pick any of my own flowers…my yard is one giant bouquet.
I love poppies!! Both photos are gorgeous, but if I had to pick it would be the second one.
Your poppy is lovely. I apologize about the problem with Mr. Linky. I was at work, at B&N, and was unaware of a problem. It had been set to expire at 11:59 PM, and I’ve corrected it.
So beautiful!
I love Californian Poppies I grow them in my garden in Victoria, Australia.
