Pink camellia flowers
When I was in Northern California recently, this camellia plant was beginning to come into bloom. In January! When I lived there I had an old shrub of just this kind of pink flower outside of my house. These grow to at least 10 or 12 feet tall (3-4 meters)! No scent, but such flower perfection.

oh that is pretty. Its a camellia? really? I would have thought a peony. Are they related? And it blooms in January? We are just a touch north of the Carolinas but close enough to the water to keep our temps mild- I wonder how they would do here. Sure are pretty. I bet the local deer would just love them though!
Thank you for stopping by my blog today! Happy Pink Saturday!

Camellias are big, woody shrubs with evergreen leaves. They like a more acidic soil, the same kind that evergreens like firs and redwoods like, which is where they naturally grow. In the northern latitude of Seattle they can take full sun but in California they need some shade. They are not related to peonies. If the soil is right I think you ought to be able to grow them. Talk to a local nursery person. If necessary, add acid fertilizer. They bloom in early spring. California is much warmer than Seattle, so they were just getting started in CA but not even close up here in Seattle. I would say they will probably be in full bloom in CA in maybe March and here in Seattle probably closer to April or May.
I do not know about whether deer like them, however. Probably, but they like everything, almost! Good luck, Sara

Camellias are the prettiest flower! This lovely blossom looks so soft you just want to touch its petals!
