Blue heron and harbor seals
In the fall, on a boat out of Anacortes, WA, we saw this great blue heron and some seals resting at the edge of one of the islands. We didn’t want to get too close to disturb them. I was told they are either harbor seals or sea lions. Does anyone know for sure which they are?
Since this is such an unusual photo for me, and how many Blue Herons do I get to see posing, anyway, I’m categorizing this as my Best Post of the Week.

If they are grey and spotted, with rear flippers sticking straight out the back, they are harbor seals. Sea lions tend to be one color, usually black, and their rear flippers are forward a bit so they can sort of walk on land. Nice picture. I’ve been out on a boat in the same area (San Juan Islands) and it is indeed a beautiful place.
Love the texture of the rocks. Very nicely captured.
The contrast of the rocks and the water is awesome. This is a beautiful shot. You are so fortunate to live in such a bourgeois part of the country…endless photo possibilities.
Beautiful capture! Happy WW!
Nice!
Great shot. The water is so calm.
Simply Delicious
Nice capture, I like the way the bird is dwarfed by the rock.

Looks like they found a quiet spot to hang. Happy WW!
love herons…love seals….very nice.
I love the contrast here in colors and textures.
I thought only Maine had a rocky coastline like that. I’m hoping to visit in the PNW this summer so you are helping me get in the mood. Beautiful photo.
Nice contrast…love the texture of the boulders.
Great shot. Beautiful colors.
Happy WW!
These photo is beautiful, love it!
Watery Wednesday
This is the second photo I’ve seen today of a blue heron. We have them in these parts also, but I’ve never been able to get a close up shot.
Blessings,
Joan
That is a great photo! Happy WW!
It is so nice to live in this part of the country. I’m in the San Francisco area and we have a lot of wonderful wildlife as well. I’ve also been fortunate to visit your area frequently – and to be able to travel all over the world. At 66, having lost my nursing job of 21 years in massive budget cuts, retirement, with its limited income, has caused major changes in my life but I’ve got wonderful memorie.
Beautiful -I wonder what you had to do to take this pic? (since there’s water in front of it…!)
Stones and seals, heron and water–all a feast for the eyes!
A SEEKER OF WATER
A seeker of water, they say,
Is likely to savor the day,
If she can find dew,
A few raindrops too—
Or even some vast ocean spray!
