Horse grazing in sunshine

I took this photo from my bedroom window exactly a year ago. This year I found out that the horse in our neighbor’s pasture absolutely loves to eat those cosmos flowers which I planted much too near the fence. Next year I’ll plant enough for both of us.

Spathiphyllum or peace lily macro

Spathiphyllum is a very common houseplant and does well with a bit of neglect and in dark spaces. I’m pretty sure that the white part is a bract, or a differently colored special leaf, and the true flower is the pebbly, spiky part. It was one of the very first houseplants I ever got to bloom. This particular one is in the Volunteer Park Conservatory, which is my favorite flower haunt in Seattle.

Perfect pink rose

On that visit to Trudy’s Floral Design a couple of days ago, I spotted a perfect pink rose in a little vase. Let us all admire the perfection of a rose. Why does it continue to fascinate us so much?

Chinese lantern flowers

I visited my favorite Seattle florist, Trudy’s Floral Design, this afternoon. I love that Trudy grows some of her flowers in her own garden. It was so great to see beautiful and unusual flowers close up again. Since the full-year project of visiting the Volunteer Park Conservatory each month last year to take photos for my book, I have been missing masses of beautiful flowers. I’ll have to do something about that.

NEWS FLASH: I’ll be signing books at Trudy’s Floral Design at her holiday Open House on Thursday, November 10, from 2:30 to 6:30. Please drop by and enjoy her lovely flowers, special decorations, a tree and poinsettias, plus goodies!

Gladiolus macro

At a District Garden Club flower show not long ago, late summer flowers were in glorious abundance. I was a bit distracted as I was selling copies of my book there for the first time in front of the public. They were very well received, I’m happy to say. It was so much fun, meeting fans and signing books. But even though there wasn’t much time for photography, I did get this image, which I love very much. I’m calling it my Best Post of the Week, too.

Rieger begonia blossom

I have a hanging basket with four Rieger begonias planted in it, and each fall I take it in, it dies back, and in the spring as it starts to come up again, I repot it and put it outdoors. Very easy and successful. The four plants are similar but not the same, so it makes a great display, blooming in mostly shade the way they do. A very good plant!

Fall flower display

The Burien WA Farmers Market was a perfect place to visit on Thursday. Fruit and vegetables were plentiful, beautiful and cheap, and look at these flowers! The grower said he cuts back his mums not once, but twice, to get them flowering so compactly and timing them to bloom for this fall display. I wish I could have bought them all!

Two pink cosmos

There’s nothing like natural light, is there? These cosmos from my garden were catching just a bit of sun in their vase on the windowsill. This image, like most of the ones I show here, is straight out of the camera. When the light is right, most of the photo is just right there for you. Keep your eyes open and be quick!

Tiny red fuchsias

That Garden Club District flower show not too long ago was so much fun. I love seeing what other gardeners can grow that do well around here. I believe this is a hardy fuchsia, which means that the top part may die back in the winter, but the plant will survive. They bloom late, but so welcome in the garden.
