Solstice sun

This rose is from the OTHER solstice, the summer one, but I show it with a nod to our Down Under friends. For us in the throes of darkness in the Northern Hemisphere, here is an image to remind us that as the earth tips tonight, it is bringing us ever closer to the light.

Candelabra

At a friend’s home, this free-standing, wrought-iron candelabra with glass votives cast a fine shadow.

Santa chair

From a couple of years ago at the fabulous Victorian Christmas display at Seattle’s Volunteer Park Conservatory, a red chair for Santa.

Tree shadows

Visiting suburban Connecticut a couple of weeks ago on a marvelously clear day…

Cloisters atrium

Another image from the Cloisters in New York City. This interior space makes me feel so peaceful.

Datura flower

I saw this in the New York City Cloisters herb garden post below. The full name on the sign was “Horn of Plenty, Downy Thorn Apple, Datura metel (Solanaceae).” They say it is poisonous, but so lovely!

Cloisters garden

The Cloisters museum and gardens, the branch of The Metropolitan Museum of Art devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe, is in New York City. I was lucky enough to visit on a perfectly still and warm November afternoon. This area is a garden devoted to medicinal plants and herbs used in medieval times.

Orange brugmansia

The weather has gotten too cold for this brugmansia (Angel’s Trumpet) plant to stay on the patio, so into the living room it has come until the warm weather returns. Every night the scent perfumes the entire house.

Yellow dahlia macro

Here’s a closeup of the flower in the post below. I really love this image and I am calling it my Best Post of the Week.

Lemon yellow dahlias

I recently gave away some extra garden plants I had, and a neighbor who picked some up brought a bouquet of dahlias from her garden as a thank you. I have heard of dahlias called dinner-plate size, but thought that was poetic license. This is for real. Here is her bouquet on my kitchen table, with a regular box of tissues there for scale.
