White amaryllis

A new kind of decor bulb for me, an amaryllis in a wax jacket, all ready to go. No planting, no watering, all inside the bulb! How magical is that? We chose a large bulb and were rewarded with two flower stems.

Pink ladies

Pink ladies are a kind of amaryllis (amaryllis Belladona) hardy in my zone 8b. I recently removed a tree that was shading these pink ladies and they finally feel like blooming. They are very fragrant. Their foliage comes up in the winter and dies back, but the flower stalks emerge with no leaves in August, which is why they are sometimes called naked ladies. In parts of Northern California you can see fabulous, huge banks of them naturalized along roadsides.

Backlit amaryllis

I’ve gotten a lot of pleasure out of the planted big amaryllis bulb I got in December. This is its third flower stalk!

Amaryllis with seeds

My windowsill Minerva amaryllis bloomed earlier. Now a second bloom is happening, and the first bloom actually set seed! Below is a view of the dark brown seed and a second, unripe pod behind it.

Amaryllis bud

Sometimes the bud is almost more thrilling than the flower. The sense of possibilities!

Red amaryllis

When I was in Mexico this spring, I was charmed to see amaryllis blooming in gardens. So I put mine on the patio in full sun, figuring if it can take sun in Mexico, it can certainly take it in Seattle. It bloomed today!

Amaryllis stamens

I think the white part is the anther. See the post a couple down from here to view this flower.

Amaryllis indoors

I’ve had good luck with getting some red amaryllis to rebloom. I treat them like houseplants and give them summers outside on the sunny patio. The geraniums behind it do well that way, too.

Red amaryllis macro

I have been so happy with my amaryllis bulb which has now rebloomed twice! Here’s a close up of some marvelous petal detail. Can it get any redder?

Red Lion amaryllis

This is the second amaryllis plant that I have managed to make rebloom. Isn’t it pretty? This rebloom might even look better than the original bloom last year! Clever me. (Note: if you grow these, it is very important to put them in a heavy enough pot so they can’t tip over.) I use the Schultz liquid drops to make a weak fertilizer when I water so I don’t have to remember which plant needs what and when, and I think they like this regime, plus a south windowsill.

Of course, Ruby Tuesday 2 is the place to visit for more great shots with red featured in them.
