Cake slice of plants

At the Northwest Flower & Garden Show there was something you just don’t see every day, a “wedding cake” made entirely of plant material. Isn’t this slice of “cake” adorable? Be sure to scroll down a few photos for several more I posted last week from last year’s show, or just put NWFGS in the search box at right.

Orange crocosmia

A beautiful flower, extremely adaptable (almost invasive!) but so very graceful. Good in bouquets, this crocosmia (also called Montbretia) is also found in the taller, all red version “Lucifer.”

Stargazer lily macro

I had to look it up, but these stargazer lily parts are stamens, which are the pollen-bearing organ of a flower, consisting of the filament and the anther. I know you had better not get that pollen on your clothes, either—stain city. But inhale that fabulous perfume!

First rose

This red rose bud (probably ‘Don Juan”) is my first rose of the season. This particular rosebush is grown from a cutting I took at our last house five years ago, and THAT rosebush was from a cutting that a friend rooted for me when I still lived in California. It’s intensely fragrant. Happy rose season to all my friends in the Northern Hemisphere!

Drenched red rhodie

Seattle has had rain, and lots of it. We’re normally pretty damp, but this is WET.

Geraniums indoors

I have a south window in my living room, so I took some geraniums indoors last fall. Why not? Here they are in a sunbreak (that’s a Seattle term) last week, looking out at my backyard.
