Germinating peas

We’ve been having a cold and wet Spring in Seattle. Even though I soaked them for a few hours before planting, my SugarSnap peas took almost three weeks to germinate! But finally, they are showing (this photo taken a couple of days ago in a sunbreak). Above and to the right of the teensy shoots just breaking through the ground are some SugarSnap starts I happened to find for sale, so that’s going to make harvest longer. Spinach seeds just showing their true leaves to the left.

Peas begin to show above the surface of the soil. Can you see them?

Chionodoxa

Chionodoxa, little bulbs commonly known as glory-of-the-snow, bloom in very early spring. So welcome on a recent sunny day.

Purple hellebore

Hellebore flowers bloom wonderfully early. They usually have very nodding flowers, but this one is face-up!

Spring flowers

The little mini-daffodils are up! Spring will definitely get here, but first Seattle is due for some cold and snow this week. I’ll keep you posted.

Succulents at Longwood

A few years ago I was lucky enough to tour the incredible Longwood Gardens outside of Philadelphia. My goodness, just stellar. Here is a shot of some succulent plants.

Houseplants in afternoon sunshine

Winter’s big plus up in Seattle is that the sun, when it’s shining, comes way deep into the room if you have a southern exposure. The plants are a bit confused as they get no direct sun in the summer but of course then there are much longer days.

Pink anthurium

My anthurium plant has given me a lot of pleasure with its long bloom time and pretty shadows. Since I am in Seattle it seems to be thriving in a south window. Its heart-shaped “flower” is actually a bract, or a modified leaf, flaring out from the base of a fleshy spike (spadix) where the tiny real flowers grow.

Free calendar

In honor of Inauguration Day yesterday and the big change it represents for the USA, I created a 2021 photo calendar of beautiful bouquets, all taken over the last few years at Seattle’s NW Flower & Garden Festival (formerly the NW Flower & Garden Show). #NWFGS #NWFGF You are welcome to download and share this Bouquets 2021 Calendar.

If you print it out, I suggest at perhaps at 80% size (for even borders), centered on the page, printing on only ONE side of the page—a little craft project for you. Enjoy!

In the comments, I’d love to know your favorite photo page.
