Red Lion amaryllis

It rebloomed! I’ve read all kinds of complicated instructions, but they sound like way too much work to me. All I did was keep it in a sunny (south) windowsill and keep watering it with the weak liquid fertilizer in the water that I always use for houseplants (so I don’t have to remember when to do it). Like all bulbs, amaryllis must have great drainage. After the leaves died back I still kept watering it when it was very dry. And lo and behold, a serious flower stalk emerged two weeks ago and now is in full bloom! The only other thing is that they must be inside a heavy pot because they are so top heavy and can easily fall over.

Orchid display

Oh, I love the Volunteer Park Conservatory. Is it any wonder I made a book about it? A recent visit to their unendingly beautiful and changing displays yielded this photo of orchids in a stray beam of sunlight. And just for fun, there’s a bonus photo below showing one of the unusual and creative plant combinations that delight me so. That one is SOOC Sunday (straight out of the camera), but I have tweaked the orchids slightly.

Magenta cyclamens

This photo was taken of an outdoor planter on the street outside of Trudy’s Floral Design in Seattle, which by the way is having a Holiday Open House pretty soon on Thursday, November 10. Cyclamens are very beautiful in person, but their graceful flowers are hard to capture “on film,” as we used to say. That’s the great thing about digital; you can just take a dozen or so until you get one that works.

‘Front Page’ rose

Hope you don’t mind a visit to my rose garden in July. This lovely is called Front Page, and it’s very fragrant. As a rose should be! After all, with so many flowers to grow, why deal with thorns and black spot if not for the fragrance?

Try checking out these cool meme sites when you have a chance: SOOC Sunday (straight out of the camera), Shadow Shot Sunday, Scenic Sunday, Pink Saturday, Today’s Flowers, Weekend Flowers, Macro Friday, Color Carnival, Macro Monday, Macro Flowers SaturdayRuby Tuesday and Outdoor Wednesday. Perfect pink rose

On that visit to Trudy’s Floral Design a couple of days ago, I spotted a perfect pink rose in a little vase. Let us all admire the perfection of a rose. Why does it continue to fascinate us so much?

Gladiolus macro

At a District Garden Club flower show not long ago, late summer flowers were in glorious abundance. I was a bit distracted as I was selling copies of my book there for the first time in front of the public. They were very well received, I’m happy to say. It was so much fun, meeting fans and signing books. But even though there wasn’t much time for photography, I did get this image, which I love very much. I’m calling it my Best Post of the Week, too.

Rieger begonia blossom

I have a hanging basket with four Rieger begonias planted in it, and each fall I take it in, it dies back, and in the spring as it starts to come up again, I repot it and put it outdoors. Very easy and successful. The four plants are similar but not the same, so it makes a great display, blooming in mostly shade the way they do. A very good plant!

Two pink cosmos

There’s nothing like natural light, is there? These cosmos from my garden were catching just a bit of sun in their vase on the windowsill. This image, like most of the ones I show here, is straight out of the camera. When the light is right, most of the photo is just right there for you. Keep your eyes open and be quick!

Pink zinnia macro

There was another one of those garden club district meetings on Wednesday. About 70 people got together for some info, a nice lunch, and a flower show. And I sold books, which was the first time I’ve done that. They bought quite a few, and I was so happy that they liked the book so much. By the way, that special launch pricing on my new book ends pretty soon, so if you are thinking of getting one (or two or three), now’s a good time. It’s called Flowers of Volunteer Park Conservatory, and perhaps you might “like” the book’s page on facebook?

Do check out Pink Saturday, Macro Flowers Saturday, Macro Monday, Macro Friday, Today’s Flowers, Color Carnival, Mellow Yellow Monday and SOOC Sunday (straight out of the camera) after you’ve browsed around here first. Lots to see! Click on Sara’s Fave Photos to get to the newest post here.
