Pink ladies

Pink ladies are a kind of amaryllis (amaryllis Belladona) hardy in my zone 8b. I recently removed a tree that was shading these pink ladies and they finally feel like blooming. They are very fragrant. Their foliage comes up in the winter and dies back, but the flower stalks emerge with no leaves in August, which is why they are sometimes called naked ladies. In parts of Northern California you can see fabulous, huge banks of them naturalized along roadsides.

Two flowerbeds

My backyard a couple of weeks ago in late July. Don’t the pointy iris leaves look good?

Pink honeysuckle

For some reason, our honeysuckle is loaded with blossoms this year. This plant is from a cutting I took several years ago from an unoccupied home’s yard. The plant was thriving in shade and clearly had not been watered in forever. Mine is planted on the north side of my house, but I find that it does seem to need regular watering. The scent at night wafting up to the windows is amazing.

Pink buds on this honeysuckle open to yellow, very fragrant flowers

Peace rose after rain

The Peace rose is among the first to bloom in my rose garden. So pretty after a bit of rain.

The Peace rose is a yellow rose with deep pink edges, and a very vigorous rose bush

Double lilacs

Most lilac blossoms have only one row of petals. But this one has an abundance of everything lilac.

Snake’s head flower

I’ve always called these checkered tulips, which they are not; they are fritillaria. A very cute early spring bulb flower, just showing in my garden now. I was charmed to hear them called snake’s head flower, something new to me. The buds DO look like that, don’t they?

Almost looking fake, these fritillaria are also called snake’s heads.
