As you might know, I am a jewelry crafter and have been having a good time in various craft fairs for a few years now. I usually make glass tile jewelry from the pages of my book, “Flowers of Volunteer Park Conservatory,” (see the Jewelry and Shows tabs at the top) but for the Sequim (WA) Lavender Festival I’ve made some special pieces. In front of my house I have some roses, and now there are lavender plants as well. A good contrast, I think.

Well, the birds got all the cherries, but we are having better luck with the berries.

This year the Tropicana rose and other roses in my front yard are much happier than last year. I’ve been using Dr. Earth fertilizer and it seems to make a huge difference. NOTE: I might be in error on the name. I think this is Fragrant Cloud. Tropicana has more pink and yellow.

The border of flowers in our backyard is doing its thing. It looks best in late light instead of today’s midday sunshine, but this is pretty nice too, no?

Lettuce doesn’t like too much hot weather, which will make it bolt (center part gets taller pretty quickly to set seed). If it bolts it becomes bitter and not very good to eat. If you harvest it as soon as you see it’s beginning to bolt, it will still be delicious. Try a leaf to see. If you have a lot of lettuce plants and want to extend your harvest time, it will last for weeks in the fridge IF you pull it out roots and all, shake and rinse off the dirt with a hose, shake off extra water, and put it in a plastic bag closed with a twist tie. You can eat fresh salads for weeks.
