Lifeguard station

The first evening we got to Seaside, Oregon, the weather was windy and the beach was pretty empty. But the light over the water! I truly love this post and am calling it my Best Post of the Week.

Surfers at Sunset Cove

The best part of our little getaway to Seaside, Oregon was watching the surfers right from our cottage on Sunset Cove. It was amazing. I realized that surfing is much, much harder than I thought, for one thing. Here’s a little video of this oh-so-scenic cove.

Sunflower center

This huge sunflower in my garden wasn’t quite ripe as of last week, but I thought I’d better get a photo now before the birds and squirrels discovered the delicious seeds.

Sunset at Cannon Beach

We had a beautiful few days on the northern coast of Oregon. Here is a sunset, with ducks, at the magnificent Cannon Beach.

Damsel fly

At the Grant County Fair in central Washington we saw this damsel fly perched on a vendor booth. It was about 2 inches or 5cm across. I don’t usually like photos of insects but I’ll make an exception for this one.

Wild Horse monument

At a Columbia River crossing in Washington State, there’s a monument to the wild horses that roamed the area. The sky is huge and the horses, although life size, look so tiny.

Maidenhair fern

This is the signature fern of Seattle’s Volunteer Park Conservatory and they use them to fill in spaces and add texture to the showier plants. The little leaflets or fronds are about a centimeter, or less than half an inch. The frilly, scalloped edges and shiny black stems are so pretty! These are actually not too hard to grow in the garden or of course as houseplants, but do NOT let them dry out. See post below for update about the Conservatory.

Fishing at sunset

Drove to a local spot for some scenic wonderfulness at sunset, and we were surprised to find more than a dozen fisherpeople at the water’s edge. See the pink salmon on the right that the fellow just caught? I understand the fish are close to shore because they are looking for their spawning creek to swim up into. Love the Pacific Northwest.
