Flowers for Today: Fuchsia

I’ve learned that fuchsias (the late, long-time San Francisco columnist Herb Caen called them the world’s most carefully spelled flower!) require a steady diet of fertilizer to bloom well. So I finally was generous with the plant food, and look what happened! For more beautiful flowers from around the world, click HERE.

Today's Flower is a fall crocus, perhaps?

Walking the other day with my visiting daughter, I found these low flowers perhaps 6 or 8 inches tall, with  no leaves. It was a typical Seattle fall day with a bit of rain still on the petals. I think they are called Fall Crocus, but I may certainly be wrong. Anyone know the real name?

Flowers for today from my garden

All these dahlias and other flowers were from my backyard. Not too bad when you figure that we just moved here in May and there were no flowerbeds, just some big shrubs and one huge cedar tree. I’ll get the perfect photo for that someday, but not yet. Today we have two bouquets. We had some people over and of course I had to pick flowers. Please let me know which photo you like best! The Fair

We went to the Puyallup Fair, the huge one near Seattle that means the summer is pretty much over, but not today—oh, no, a perfect summer day, and so wonderful for photos. Lots of dahlias exhibited, too. Hope you like the photos.

And all of these qualify for Ruby Tuesday (click HERE for more Ruby Tuesday photos) as well.

Zinnias for Today's Flowers

Today I went to the Des Moines WA farmers market. The bunches of flowers are so thrilling, and I was able to buy organic fruit from the farmer, a wonderful thing. For more beautiful flower photos, click HERE.

Flowers for today

I was at a flower show from the district’s garden clubs. I’d like to know which of the three photos below you like best. The first one was the display with their ribbons lit from a convenient skylight. The second shows the hydrangeas in their varied colors. And the third is one dahlia, I believe the variety is Firecracker. It won a blue ribbon, too. Which photo appeals the most to you?

Finally some rain

Seattle is known for rain but really doesn’t get that much, only an average of 36 inches a year. We do get lots of drizzle and clouds, it’s true, but this year is quite dry and cool, unlike many other places. Before the rain this week, we had only about 14 inches of rain since January 1, about 25% under normal. But it rained over two inches recently and it’s still showery. The garden loved it.

Daylilies

Right after I watered in the heat spell we had, the daylilies were looking particularly fine. Here’s a Ruby Tuesday photo for you. For more Ruby Tuesday photos, click here.

Glorious Glads, Geranium gems

glads.jpg

The big push of flowers is easing off now, but still a showy display from the glads. They look so thrilling in the brilliant Seattle summer sunshine.

And yesterday the geraniums looked just perfect. Somehow the bright sun provided a mysterious shadow effect in this photograph.
