White Japanese anemone

These pretty, late summer Japanese anemone flowers are easy to grow and do well in shade, plus they come back every year! I love perennials. At home I have some tall lavender ones, but these were photographed on an excursion to Whidbey Island, Washington.

Pink orchid macro

At the Volunteer Park Conservatory in Seattle the other day, the sun shining through the orchids was really wonderful. Those lights and darks really fascinate me. Sorry, but I have no idea of the name of this pretty.

Pink rose macro

Well, the roses seem to really respond to that chemical fertilizer. I held off as long as I could and then gave in. Roses really thrill me and I’ll do pretty much anything to have blooms like this in my garden. Anything that doesn’t cost too much money, that is. Or spray. But I do water, feed, and deadhead. Isn’t it pretty?

Zinnias and glads

The flowers for sale at Pike Place Market in Seattle, all locally grown, are the most beautiful I have ever seen, anywhere. The only problem I have is that the photos I take are so intense that I have a real problem choosing one to show. A good problem to have.

Here are some zinnias and glads (gladiolus? gladioli?) for your enjoyment.

Sunflower face with seeds

There are so many kinds of sunflowers these days. I kind of like the old fashioned kind that makes seeds in the middle. This one didn’t grow too tall, but it certainly was doing its thing, seed-wise. A few days later, the birds and squirrels had poked out some of its hypnotic perfection, but so it goes.

Pink English roses

These pink English roses were at the home of the same friends who grew the incredible lilies a couple of posts below. What a garden they have!

Orange daylilies

That tea last week was really quite a photo opportunity for someone like me. Flowers, teapots, and shadows everywhere! I’m calling it my Best Post of the Week, but the one below of dusk at Bowman Bay “floats my boat” as well.

Hydrangea macro

Hydrangeas are some of my top fave flowers. Not only do they bloom in quite deep shade, as well as in the sun in this latitude, but they are super easy to propagate. When cutting back in the spring (they bloom on old wood, so don’t go too far), take some woody stems you’ve pruned and stick them into the ground pretty well, under the mother plant so they get shaded and do not dry out. Keep them watered and maybe in July, check on them and I bet that more than one will be sprouting new leaves, showing you it has rooted. Dig it up, pot it up, and voila, a new hydrangea plant!

One other thing about hydrangeas: as shown by their name, they need water! Do not let them dry out, and wilting is hard on a plant. But at least it will forgive you and recover, if not too very dry.

I am participating in Macro Monday, Outdoor Wednesday, Weekend Flowers, SOOC Sunday (straight out of the camera), and Floral Friday. If you have arrived here via a link and there is only this one photo below, please click on Sara’s Fave Photos Blog above to see the complete production.

Lavatera

This is a new flower for me. I was admiring a huge shrub in a beautiful garden in Coupeville, WA, when the owner came out and chatted with us. To me, this lavatera looks like it is related to hollyhock. I wish I had the space to grow this, as it looked about 6 feet (2 meters) tall and wide, and she said it was four years old, and you cut it to the ground each winter. What a stunner!

Simplicity rose

This rose, which I believe is called Simplicity, is growing in a neighbor’s yard. It’s very healthy and seems to get no care at all. I’d like to have a rose garden with only tough, healthy roses like this, but how can you really tell in the nursery? Does “disease resistant” really mean anything? And don’t mention Knockout roses, because they still don’t have fragrance. Why bother with roses without fragrance?

This photo post is participating in Scenic Sunday, Shadow Shot Sunday 2, Outdoor Wednesday, Pink Saturday, Weekend Flowers, Floral Friday, and SOOC Sunday (straight out of the camera). Thank you for visiting here. Browse around to see what you can find. Click on the tag Pink, perhaps?
