Football lily

Football lily, or Haemanthus multiflorus, is a new flower for me. I found this in the Wave Hill conservatory, on my recent visit to New York City. I am including the second photo so you can see the fascinating green starburst, spiky bud form as well. The flowers were almost as big as my hand!

You might want to check out Today’s FlowersWeekend Flowers, Floral Friday, Ruby Tuesday 2, Macro Monday, SOOC Sunday (straight out of the camera), and Pink Saturday for more photos with a theme. Orange hibiscus macro

Tonight I was at the Volunteer Park Conservatory, attending its annual Friends of the Conservatory meeting. The first part was in the Conservatory itself, with perfect late afternoon light showing off many of the exquisite floral displays to perfection. Here is an orange hibiscus flower, all glowing in the light.

Please explore Shadow Shot Sunday 2, Mellow Yellow Monday, Today’s Flowers, Weekend Flowers, Floral Friday, Macro Flowers Saturday, Ruby Tuesday 2, Macro Monday, and Macro Flowers Saturday, if you have a minute or two. Orchid show in New York

I was lucky enough to go the New York Botanical Garden‘s Orchid Show which continues until April 22. If you get a chance, you must go. Ravishing, wonderful, gorgeous! Not just a bunch of flowers, but so exquisitely displayed. And New York City has been having an amazing springtime, so my favorite pink trees in full bloom graced the grounds around the Enid Haupt Conservatory that houses the orchid show.

Here is one lovely orchid for your viewing pleasure. Visit Macro Monday, Macro Flowers Saturday, SOOC Sunday (straight out of the camera), Today’s FlowersWeekend Flowers, Floral Friday, Mellow Yellow Monday, Ruby Tuesday 2 and Pink Saturday for more fun photos with a theme. Dusty kitty

I have posted a picture of Dusty kitty before, but it was a long time ago. This recent shot shows her in kitty bliss as she accepts some petting from my daughter, trying to get some work done. Dusty is one of those cats who loves everyone, and knows their job in life is to be petted. By you. Hope you enjoy this view of a very sweet cat.

Lavender crocus

Don’t we all love crocuses! But why are they not croci? In any case, these incredibly cheerful small flowers are so very welcome in our gray Seattle weather. And they spread nicely, too. Plant some in your garden this fall and you will be so happy seeing their little sprouts poke out next late winter.

Cherry tree

This cherry tree near Seattle’s soon-to-be-demolished Viaduct, not too far from Pike Place Market, always blooms the earliest of any that I see. Its urban setting might be a bit dark and certainly noisy, but the somewhat protected space encourages such a cheerful early display. We love it. It will be interesting to see how it fares in the coming years.

Fragrant gardenia

I know there’s no point in mentioning fragrance in a photo, but how can you show a gardenia flower without doing that? They were my mother’s favorite flower, and I love how simple and unassuming they are, but so powerful in their effect. Sort of like her. In any case, I wish you a happy St. Patrick’s Day and hope you have fragrance in your life today.

I took this at Swanson’s Nursery which is now carrying my Flowers book in their Urban Living gift shop. One of my favorite nurseries in the Seattle area.

Pink calla lilies

My daughter is staying with us for a bit, and here is a photo of the pink calla lilies I got her for Valentine’s Day. I knew when I bought them that I would want to photograph them. What heavenly, sensuous curves and colors these flowers have. Wish I could grow them, but so far, no luck.

Daffodil buds in sunlight

Daffodils have such great buds. I love the way they look like tapered fingertips with green fingernails. Maybe? Anyway, their strong reach towards the weak late winter sunshine is so much appreciated. They are promising springtime!

Lovely places to visit include Scenic Sunday, Today’s Flowers, Macro Monday, Macro Flowers Saturday, Weekend Flowers, Floral Friday, Outdoor Wednesday, Shadow Shot Sunday 2 and  SOOC Sunday (straight out of the camera). Thank you for visiting!

Red primroses

Some plants are just photogenic, and primroses are a prime example. Maybe it’s the shiny leaves, maybe it’s the simplicity of the petal forms, but if the light is good and the flowers are pretty, you are going to get a good photo of these cuties. I just want to take home the entire nursery-full.

Google Friend Connect has been discontinued for all non-Blogger sites. I am trying a new Linky Tools followers widget to the right. I hope you will use it to follow this blog, and I apologize for your trouble of doing it twice for all those who have previously followed.
