Yellow brugmansia

This Angels Trumpet, or brugmansia, is not in my garden but I did grow one this year and I can tell you, they have a heavenly, sweet, delightful fragrance. No wonder they call them Angels Trumpets, and not just for their graceful shape!

Cherry tomatoes

My tomatoes look and taste great this year. Last year many of them split, which was so disappointing. What I learned was that happened because I had underwatered, so the tomatoes had thick, tough skins which burst when the plant got a good dousing when it rained. This year I was better about the watering and it made a big difference. Also I used better fertilizer, added alfalfa meal at planting, AND went out with a dry paintbrush when it was flowering to try to get better fruit set. Something worked!

Fresh peaches

We went to Moses Lake WA for the first time, and I got to go to the Farmers Market and buy some fresh peaches. Is there anything prettier? I like this post very much and am calling it my Best Post of the Week.

Red zinnias

Outside Seattle’s beloved Volunteer Park Conservatory the planting beds are unusually beautiful this year. Here brilliant red zinnias are set off by some kind of ornamental grass. So pretty!

Agapanthus bud

I’m going to be on vacay for a bit so I’ll schedule posts of a few photos from a recent visit to my favorite flower haunt, Seattle’s Volunteer Park Conservatory and link to the various photo memes I love so much when I return.

This agapanthus or Lily of the Nile is almost more beautiful in bud than in flower.

Ruffled hollyhock

This unusual, frilly double hollyhock can be seen at Seattle’s Volunteer Park Conservatory right now. The flower is maybe 10 cm or 2-3 inches across. The tiny purple buds are throatwort.

Maidenhair fern

This is the signature fern of Seattle’s Volunteer Park Conservatory and they use them to fill in spaces and add texture to the showier plants. The little leaflets or fronds are about a centimeter, or less than half an inch. The frilly, scalloped edges and shiny black stems are so pretty! These are actually not too hard to grow in the garden or of course as houseplants, but do NOT let them dry out. See post below for update about the Conservatory.

Stargazer lilies

I’m on a lily kick. These are in a close neighbor’s garden. I heard that all lilies used to point down and be droopy, so when a grower managed to get it facing up, he or she called it Stargazer. Great name.

Drying herbs

I’ve been picking some of the lavender and put some nails in the carport so I could hang up the bunches, tied in rough twine. And before the mint goes to flowers, why don’t you cut some and dry that, too? Mint tea is wonderful.
