Red anthurium macro

These anthurium flowers aren’t really flowers, just like some bromeliads and pointsettias, with their colored leaves (bracts) looking for all the world like a flower. I just love the way the shine on them lights up in photos. Very photogenic plant. Did you know that some flowers are far easier to photograph than others? During the summertime at the Volunteer Park Conservatory when they had their fabulous display of brugmansia, or Angel Trumpets, I tried with so many photos to capture their magnificent presence. So lovely and graceful in person, and so frequently awkward and charmless in a photo. I do love anthuriums for their good looks in photos, if for no other reason.

Visit Ruby Tuesday and Mellow Yellow Monday, Color Carnival, Macro Friday, SOOC and Macro Flowers Saturday for more photos with a theme idea. And check out a new tag or category here if you have a minute, or you might see what’s new at Free Photos next door. If there’s only one photo below, click on Sara’s Fave Photos for the rest of them.

And even though I do like the two scenic photos above very much, I’m choosing this one for my Best Post of the Week. If you don’t see any above, just click on Sara’s Fave Photos and they will appear.

Pink Christmas cactus

This little beauty was on sale at Pike Place Market this afternoon. These succulent plants don’t look like too much (for most of the year) with their flat, sort of leathery “leaves,” but this time of year they are such a blessing. I am now the proud owner of two of them and I see the appeal. Wonderful, showy and complicated flowers, brilliantly colored, just when we need some color in our lives.

Visit Macro Flowers Saturday, Color Carnival, Cactus Monday and Pink Saturday for some more photo fun. This one is straight out of the camera, too.

Try a new tag today. What about pink? As always, if there is only one photo below, click on Sara’s Fave Photos here or above for more.

Summer dahlia macro

All I want is some sunshine, so this dahlia flower photo will have to do. The stripey petals are called striated, I believe. Isn’t it a cool effect? This was an annual type, so it’s forever gone, but that’s why photos are so great, to me at least.

Visit Mellow Yellow Monday, Macro Monday, Color Carnival and Ruby Tuesday for more interesting and creative photos.

Blush rose

I just love the way this rose looks. So tenderly colored, so perfect.

Pink Saturday has lots more pink things, and SOOC has more straight-out-of-the-camera photos. Today’s Flowers has blooms from around the world. Do check it out!

Decorative kale

Kale can be quite delicious if you cook it right, but this kind is just for pretty, as my mom used to say. A local nursery had such a nice collection. It’s practically a flower, don’t you think?

Visit Macro Friday for more macros of all kinds. This one is SOOC, or straight out of the camera. And as usual, if there’s just one photo here, click on Sara’s Fave Photos for the full blog.

I like the lighting on this post a lot so I’ve put it in the Best Post of the Week category. I hope you agree.

White mum

Chrysanthemums are some of my favorite flowers. My mother grew lots of perennial mums where I grew up in Queens, New York City, and I loved the spicy smell of them. This one is from a florist, but it still smells like the backyard ones she grew.

Visit Macro Flowers Saturday for more floral close ups. And if there’s only one photo here, do click on Sara’s Fave Photos for the full blog.

Phalaenopsis orchid

I love google images. It’s the greatest plant identification tool I ever saw. I have reference books, and I love them, but if you do not know the name of a plant, good luck with finding it. With google images, you can just type in a general category and description and start browsing. This orchid may be called Pamina, or it may be Golden Treasure, OR it may be called Baldan’s Kaleidoscope. You choose. Sure is pretty though, isn’t it?

This was taken at a garden club flower show in Kent, Washington just yesterday.

Visit a new meme, Macro Friday, for great close ups. And Macro Flowers Saturday and Today’s Flowers always have lovely posts. SOOC has other straight out of the camers photos. Do click on Sara’s Fave Photos if there is only the one photo showing here.

Japanese anemone

These simple flowers are welcome in the late summer and fall garden, in the Seattle climate, anyway. They are seen in lavender or white and bloom in shade or sun, and dry seems to be OK. And they come back! I love easy perennials, don’t you? And do you notice the bee working in the background?

Visit Shadow Shot Sunday for more fascinating kinds of shadows, Today’s Flowers for flowers around the world, and Macro Flowers for more flower close ups. Macro Monday and Mellow Yellow Monday rule, too. Let’s try a new meme: Flowers on Saturday!

Snapdragon close up

A short while ago the Pike Place Market still had lots of late summer flowers. Here’s a close up of a pretty pink and yellow snapdragon flower. Didn’t you just love to pinch their little cheeks and see the jaws open when you were a kid?

Try Macro Monday and Mellow Yellow Monday for more close ups and more yellow, respectively. If you click the tag “close up” on this blog you might be surprised at how many flowers (mostly) appear.

Magenta phalaenopsis orchid

These butterfly-shaped orchids are irresistable. I love the way there is a whole stream of them on one stem, one behind the other. I took this photo at Volunteer Park Conservatory in Seattle not too long ago. Orchids are amazing and there seem to be some in bloom throughout the entire year at the Conservatory. Whatever they do, it’s working.

Visit Macro Flowers Saturday , Color Carnival , Pink Saturday and SOOC (straight out of the camera) if you have time. Great photos there.

While you are here, be sure to explore and do a search (orchid?) or a new tag (magenta?). And to get to the latest post and the full blog, click on Sara’s Fave Photos, here or above.
