Ephiphytic bromeliad

I hope I got the name right here. Please let me know if this is incorrect.

Anyway, isn’t it pretty? These are air plants, epiphytes, which live attached to bark and things in the tropical wild. I found this one in my archives from May of last year, taken at the Volunteer Park Conservatory.

Orchids at the NW Flower & Garden Show

Thursday I was lucky enough to attend the NW Flower & Garden Show in Seattle (on through tomorrow, Sunday). A great show! I liked it better than previous ones and thought the orchid displays were particularly extravagant. Very worthwhile, and what a photo op for a flower photo junkie like me. It does help to have a camera that does well in low light, though (I use a little Canon S90), and I recommend a monopod to help brace you for those longer exposure shots. Much less intrusive than a tripod and easier to set up and carry, too. You don’t get the rock-still support, but it still helps.

Pink shooting star

I know it’s not really a pink shooting star. I know it’s only the condensation trail of some sort of plane lit up by the setting sun, but doesn’t it look like it? This was taken near the Seattle waterfront in early January, and the digital camera info tells me it was taken at 4:46pm. And that was on a clear afternoon. The days are definitely getting longer these days!

Visit Skywatch Friday for more skies from around the planet, Pink Saturday for more pinkness of all kinds, Blue Monday for things blue, Scenic Sunday, and SOOC for more straight-out-of-the-camera shots. Join in yourself if you like; it’s way more fun that way.

I do like this post very much, as it’s quite unusual for me, so I’m calling it my Best Post of the Week. Hope you agree.

Hellebores

The Northwest Flower & Garden Show is coming up and I can’t wait. This year I am volunteering to do a stint at the Volunteer Park Conservatory booth so I get in free. Yay! Checking back over last year’s photos, I found this hellebore you might enjoy. Lighting is very challenging there for photography, especially the hand-held, available light kind that I prefer. This year I think I’ll take my monopod to help. But don’t you love that image stabilization thing all the new cameras have now? It really helps a lot.

African violets

These magenta-and-white African violets with their thick, fuzzy leaves were photographed at our local garden club’s quarterly meeting and horticulture show. Do you see how the pink splotches are heart shaped? I’ve never had any luck with growing African violets myself, but do appreciate their cheerful flowers, especially at this dark time of year. Maybe I’ll try some again.

Pink camellia flowers

When I was in Northern California recently, this camellia plant was beginning to come into bloom. In January! When I lived there I had an old shrub of just this kind of pink flower outside of my house. These grow to at least 10 or 12 feet tall (3-4 meters)! No scent, but such flower perfection.

Double pink and white azaleas

When the petals are not just one flat row, the flowers are called doubles. The edge of a different color around the petals is called picotee. These azaleas with maidenhair ferns on the side from the Volunteer Park Conservatory are pretty special for both reasons, and you probably won’t find too many like this in your neighbor’s front yard. I think they are so sweet and cheerful!

Pinatas at Mi Pueblo

While recently in San Rafael in Northern California, I had a chance to visit the big hispanic supermarket Mi Pueblo, one of a chain of ten stores around California. It was so great! Very entertaining. Everywhere I looked were perfect displays of all kinds of delicious-looking foods, a perfect photo op for a photo junkie like me. Here’s a peek at the ceiling decor over the fruits and vegetables.

Foxgloves macro

Winter has only just begun and of course we’re yearning for spring already. Here’s a vision of spring foxgloves, just a few months away. They are very easy to grow from seed, especially in the Pacific Northwest with our low light and acid soil, but they only bloom the second year.

Pink Christmas cactus

This little beauty was on sale at Pike Place Market this afternoon. These succulent plants don’t look like too much (for most of the year) with their flat, sort of leathery “leaves,” but this time of year they are such a blessing. I am now the proud owner of two of them and I see the appeal. Wonderful, showy and complicated flowers, brilliantly colored, just when we need some color in our lives.

Visit Macro Flowers Saturday, Color Carnival, Cactus Monday and Pink Saturday for some more photo fun. This one is straight out of the camera, too.
